Wâlden

Wâlden explores the quiet influence of the landscape you grow up in. How the lines, openings and boundaries of a place settle into your body and later shape how you feel in a completely different environment.

I grew up among the lakes and wide open horizons of Súdwest-Fryslân. For me, space is a way of breathing. When I find myself in a denser, more enclosed landscape, something in me can begin to tighten, a subtle unease, as if my body is missing its own horizon.

But it works the other way around as well: someone shaped by the shelter of trees and the soft darkness of the forest might experience the openness of for example the Wadden Sea as overwhelming. A horizon without a frame.

In Wâlden I explore how deep this imprint of landscape can go. How landscape becomes memory, and how memory becomes a kind of inner space. The photographs do not offer fixed answers; they are invitations to sense where we belong.
